Day 2 (Jan 13th) - Barrier Reef

Woke up at 6am (I was actually up at 3 because someone went to the bathroom, the toilet flushes for 20s, long time!) for breaky (toast, fruit, cereal). Today was diving day. Since most of us are beginners, they're doing our intro dive on a reef near Hooke Island. Last night I was assigned into diving group #2, so I didn't actually go into the water until 7:45. Alot of people went snorkelling before their dive, but I didn't want to get cold before my first dive ever (stayed on the boat instead). So I sat on deck in my full body stinger suit waiting my turn. There was 3 of us in our group. Brent took us to the dive spot in the tender. We actually did that little hold the respirator/mask thingy, and fell into the water backwards (just like you see in movies). Anisley got us to do some basic skills before we went any deeper (stuff like what to do if you lose your respirator, how to get water out of your googles while under water, and how to get water out of your respirator). Ended up going down 6.3m on my first dive! I'm sure we could've went deeper but there was one guy in our group that was having some troubles decompressing his ears. I saw a jelly, lots of small fish and pretty coral. It was so cool scuba diving that I think I might do a second dive.

In the afternoon, we sailed out to the Great Barrier Reef and went snorkelling (at Bait reef). The crew said we were lucky there was no wind because normally the site we were at is too choppy to dive/snorkel at. On my numerous snorkelling adventures of the day (I did 3 snorkel outings in all today) I saw loads of fish near the reef's edge, bright blue starfish, 2 sea turtles (road the EAC with them, I swear they were Dude and Crush ;)), bright corals and reef sharks (not as big as the sharks I saw in the Caribbean). The turtles were really neat. I positioned myself perfectly so that when they came up to the surface to breathe I petted their shells :).

Dinner was great! Had spagetti with some spicy vegetarian sauce & garlic bread. Desert was peach & pear crepes! So good!

We're sleeping on the Great Barrier Reef tonight! After turning off all the lights, we could see dark spots in the water (fish) near the boat. In the distance we saw the lightning of a big storm that was supposedly headed our way. Stargazed again tonight, saw another shooting star (that's 2 in 2 nights).

Later on before bed, we all watched a slideshow of the pic's Ansiley's been taking of us throughout the past two days.

Time to brace for the storm!
